Motor Liability

What is Motor Liability Insurance?

Motor Liability Insurance, also known as Third Party Liability Insurance covers only the vehicle that you drive into.  There is no insurance on your vehicle, so the costs of repairing or replacing your own vehicle will be for your own account.  However, in the event that you hit another vehicle, and even worse, cause this vehicle to hit a third vehicle, this insurance will pay for the repairs or replacements of those vehicles.

Who needs Motor Liability Insurance?

Everyone who owns any kind of motor vehicle should definitely have at least Motor Liability Insurance.  Even if you choose not to insure your own vehicle, if you drive into any other vehicle, you will be held liable for the costs of the repair or replacement of that vehicle.  One should really consider the costs of replacing some of the high valued vehicles on our roads.  Compared to the extremely affordable premiums for Motor Liability Insurance, you really cannot afford to drive without this type of insurance.

Why should you take out Motor Liability Insurance?

Many people have discovered far too late that whilst their own vehicle was cheap and easy to repair, the vehicles that they drove into were not.  They also discovered that reimbursing the owners of those vehicles for their damages often left them with debts that they spent the rest of their lives paying off.

How much does Motor Liability Insurance cost?

Premiums start from as little as R60 per month.

Typical Claims incurred on Motor Liability Insurance

Most third party claims are caused by vehicles suddenly and without warning stopping in front of another travelling vehicle.  No matter how quickly a vehicle in front of you stops, you are at fault if you drive into the back of it.

In many cases, accidents are partly caused by both parties.  In this case, the actual value of the damages to be reimbursed will be apportioned according to the percentages of fault (E.g. Car A sped through a red traffic light but Car B turned across the road in front of Car A whilst the traffic light was still red, it may be deemed that one of the vehicles was 60% at fault and the other 40% at fault).

What other Insurance should be considered along with Motor Liability Insurance?

We can insure Motor Liability on its own, or with just fire & theft cover for your own vehicle, or we can insure motor liability with comprehensive cover (full cover against fire, theft or accident) for your own vehicle.
